How Terrence Romeo handles aggressive, possessive fans

Terrence Romeo

Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) superstar Terrence Romeo is definitely movie star material. In a previous column, Golden Boy (Romeo’s PBA moniker) admitted to me that he was willing to join show biz. The fan base of some matinee idols would pale in comparison to Terrence’s massive following.

As the PBA Commissioner’s Cup opens tomorrow, all eyes will be on Terrence because he has transferred to another team. After being sidelined by an injury last conference, the former key player of Global Port is now with Talk N’ Text. Romeo, oh Romeo. Ready, shoot, go!

Here’s my chat with Terrence:

What did you reflect upon during your break when you were injured? That I must always be conditioned physically and mentally. In just one snap of a finger, the situation can change, so I should maintain my focus. I revisited my goals to keep me on track.

What adjustments are you making with your new team? Learning the system of TNT and how to be more of a team player. I’m observing the strengths and weaknesses of my teammates so I will know how I can help them and vice-versa.

How do you handle aggressive and possessive fans? I just continue to be nice to them. If I reprimand them, the situation might get worse. So I just grin and bear it.

If your life story would be made into a movie, what would the title be and who would you want to portray you? My idol Robin Padilla. Title: “Seryoso sa Laro ng Buhay” (Serious in the Game of Life)

What was your most embarrassing moment? When my rubber shoes flew off during a crucial game.

How do you handle hecklers during a game? I don’t allow them to get to me. I never let them ruin my game.

If you were a PBA coach, who will be your starting five be? Jayson Castro, Alex Cabagnot, Cliff Hodge, Ranidel de Ocampo and June Mar Fajardo.

Who is your favorite local celebrity, and what’s your fave local movie? All of Robin Padilla’s movies especially “Manila Boy.” Binoe is my fave actor of all time.

What’s the naughtiest thing you have done? When I was in high school, I ate a lot of gum. Then after chewing, I placed gum on the seats of my classmates.

What are some of your quirks? I listen to calming music so I can fall asleep.

If you could travel back in time, what would you do differently? I will correct all my mistakes in my personal life and career.

What has fame taught you? To never forget my roots. To keep my feet on the ground, because fame eventually fades. To pay it forward. You can’t stay on top forever.

It’s LA’s turn

Even if Star Music recording artist LA Santos was born with a silver spoon, he is no spoiled brat. The cute, lanky singer works hard on his music. His self-titled debut album has six originals and three covers.

LA is a success story. He overcame ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) with the help of his supportive family, and through the healing effects of music. Let him enthrall you in “#Petmalu” on April 30 at 8 p.m. at Music Museum. “Petmalu-nials” unite!

Personal: Happy Birthday to lovely debutante Nikki Barquin and my fab kumareng Mikee Dava.
