5 Korean variety shows to keep you company this long weekend
The long weekend is fast approaching and you can already envision the influx of “check-in” posts of your friends. And while you’re happy for your friends’ well-deserved vacation, you can’t help but feel a little envious when you see their updates.
This time around, you don’t have to feel that way! Heck, you don’t even have to see those posts! With binge-watching, you’ll find that you won’t even have the time to peek in your news feed. And although K-dramas are prime products of the Korean entertainment industry, their variety shows are not one to sleep on.
Just as much as K-dramas can tug on our heartstrings and make us cry, Korean variety shows can make us laugh so hard we tend to end up crying too! Here’s a list of some of the famous variety shows in Korea that you can binge-watch:
Running Man
Famous for their hide-and-seek game, wherein you have to rip off your opponent’s Velcro-ed nametag to win the game, “Running Man” is a household name for Korean variety show fans. The show now has lots of games and obstacles wherein the regular cast members (and sometimes special guests such as idols or actors/actresses) have to battle it out against each other, or form one team to win the game.
2 Days 1 Night
In “2 days 1 Night”, the regular cast, and sometimes special guests, are taken to various spots in South Korea to complete missions to be able to gain points for meals (wherein the meals are what food the regions they visited is famous for) and also to avoid punishments.
Hello Counselor
The show’s goal is to be able to solve a person’s problems regardless of age or gender. While the problems are serious, the hosts and (sometimes) guest artists still find a way to make sure that the atmosphere is light – all the while still tackling the issue (and being strict if need be).
Knowing Brothers
Portraying high school students, “Knowing Brothers” began back in 2015 and is slowly gaining momentum in the world of Korean variety shows. The hosts act as students in a classroom and their guests play newly transferred students. Several school-themed segments are showcased in the show like Entrance Application (forms filled out by guests will be read out and discussed by hosts), Guess About Me (vague or extremely private information that the guests have yet to reveal about themselves), and many more others depending on what the guest wishes to showcase. Guests vary from idol groups to actors/actresses.
The Return of Superman
Possibly one of the most famous variety shows out there, “The Return of Superman” appeals to both Hallyu fans and non-Hallyu fans. “The Return of Superman” features celebrity dads who tend to their kids without the help of their spouses (but sometimes with the help of celebrity guests or co-”Return of Superman” celebrity dads) and of course, their adorable and charming kids.
