Africa on Megan’s mind
The world has been Megan Young’s oyster since she won the Philippines’ first Miss World crown in Bali, Indonesia five years ago—and she wants to see more of it.
The 28-year-old Fil-Am beauty queen’s ascent to show biz stardom may have been slow but steady: In 2005, she ended up in the top six of “StarStruck’s” second season (won by Mike Tan and Ryza Cenon). Two years later, she found herself being relaunched as a member of Star Magic’s Batch 15 (along with Jessy Mendiola and Martin del Rosario).
After winning Miss World in 2013, Megan’s GMA 7 “homecoming” led her to career-boosting roles in the buzzed-about “Marimar” reboot and the current primetime series “The Stepsisters,” where she costars for the first time with her boyfriend Mikael Daez, whom she’s been with for seven years.
When she isn’t working, Megan spends her free time satisfying her wanderlust, by embarking on perspective-expanding “adventures” around the world—like her trip to the Maldives with Mikael in April last year.
But, Megan isn’t done exploring the world. During her visit to Davao City last week, when she was asked which other dream vacations she imagined herself going, she said Africa was on top of her list.

But, I also want to visit places like Botswana or Kenya, where there are wide spaces and open fields. Kasi ’yung napuntahan namin, it was called ‘Bush,’ because there were many bushes all over. It felt like a maze, at parang medyo tago (partially hidden).
“But, I want to go somewhere open, ’yung hindi mo alam kung hanggang saan ang horizon. I want something like that to sweep me off my feet, because that’s always been one of my dream trips. And it would even be better if I could experience and learn from its culture.”
