What made SZA ‘mad as hell’

SZA

SZA, the up-and-coming American R&B artist behind the hit songs “Love Galore” and “The Weekend,” went into the recent Grammys with five nominations, including best new artist.

She went home empty-handed—and that made her “mad as hell.”

“I just didn’t know how to take it. I didn’t say anything, I didn’t post [online], because I have never had to deal with anything I believed in wholeheartedly, or invested in, and went through something that publicly before,” SZA said in an interview with GQ.

“I wanted to be honest as f**k, and if today I’m just mad as hell, I don’t want to say something that reflects me being mad as hell. But I definitely feel blessed now. I also don’t feel compelled to explain myself,” added the singer, who was featured in the song “All the Stars,” the theme song of the blockbuster film, “Black Panther.”

Still, she’s grateful that her album, “CTRL,” has inspired “little girls across the world.” “I didn’t make my album with the Grammys in mind, and I’m not [going to] make my second one with the Grammys in mind,” she said. “I’ll just make good f**king music and try to touch people.” —ALLAN POLICARPIO
