Why Kuh can’t just sing any requested song

Kuh Ledesma

As a devout Born-Again Christian, Kuh Ledesma can’t just go and perform whatever song asked of her. She has to be careful, she said, especially about the lyrics.

“There are pop songs these days that contain words that are quite peculiar … A song can have a nice melody, but if it’s not in keeping with my beliefs, then that would mar the people’s trust in me,” she said at a recent press conference for her coming Valentine’s concert, “Love Matters.”

“I can’t talk about my faith and all that, then go onstage and do songs that have lyrics that are edgy or medyo bastos,” she added. “We have to be mindful of what we’re dishing out.”

The seasoned artist would like to believe that, through the years, her taste in music has matured into something that “uplifts and edifies” her listeners. “There are many songs to choose from, so people can’t tell you that you need to do this or that because it’s what the people love at the moment,” she pointed out.

The OPM icon’s meticulousness likewise extends to the type of acting projects she accepts. Kuh, who was last seen in GMA 7’s drama series “Because of You,” intends to focus on music for now. She would love to finish the Latin-inspired album she’s currently working on, and do concert tours.

“I’m not actively pursuing acting because it can be demanding on the schedule. I’m recording an album, and lack of sleep isn’t conducive to what I’m doing,” Kuh pointed out. “And I don’t have to fill my schedule with so many things. What’s more important is to do quality work.”

In “Love Matters,” which will be held at the ABS-CBN Vertis Tent on Feb. 13 (call 891-9999), the 62-year-old singer will be joined onstage by her daughter, Isabella Gonzalez, R&B crooner Kris Lawrence and special guest Gabby Concepcion.

“We chose Gabby because he’s handsome! But seriously, he’s a good friend … He’s mainly an actor, and people know him for that. But actually, his voice has a good tone—he can carry a tune. He can also be quite flirty or cheeky onstage,” she said.

“I love singing romantic songs and serenading people,” Kuh said. “And I’m now more mature, both as a singer and as a person, so I pour all my experiences into my performances.”
