I am hopeful,” said actor Aljur Abrenica when Inquirer asked whether the relationship between him and actress Kylie Padilla’s dad, Robin, has improved since the birth of their son, Alas Joaquin.

“We are reaching out to him. I know that he understands why we’re doing this—it’s what’s right for Alas,” he added. “I know that the time for that will eventually come. I’m just waiting for Tito Robin.”

Robin met his 5-month-old grandson for the first time during the holidays. Aljur said the incident made him tremendously happy.

“Alas first met my side of the family. I saw how excited my parents were. I wanted Kylie to experience that, too. I’m happy that Tito Robin welcomed Alas wholeheartedly,” Aljur shared with the Inquirer.

He also said he hoped for Alas to eventually meet his grandmother, Liezl Sicangco, who is based in Australia.

As to whether a wedding ceremony will happen for them this year, Aljur replied: “Kylie and I have been discussing it, but we’re not sure yet when. We’re still busy with the baby, and she is expected to go back to work soon.”

Aljur said his becoming a dad was “life-changing and fulfilling… It’s physically difficult, but emotionally rewarding.”

He added that he and Kylie mutually decided not to hire a house help. “We do everything by ourselves—cook, clean the house and take care of Alas,” he beamed.

Everyday, Aljur would wake up at 5 a.m. to take out the garbage and do his house chores. “When Kylie and Alas are up, I get the kid and let her do her thing. I’ve been out of the house for a while now, so I’m pretty sure Kylie is already feeling tired,” said Aljur at a recent press conference for his latest teleserye on ABS-CBN, “Asintado.”

“We get by,” he declared. “When I’m at work, either I ask my mom to come over to help Kylie, or they go to Tita Mariel’s (Rodriguez, wife of Robin). These days, it’s hard to keep Alas from crying. His teeth are starting to come out. That’s painful for a child.”

As Kylie’s partner, Aljur said his goal was to be a good provider, “just like my own father.”

He added: “It’s important to be very sensitive and observant because Kylie is not the type who would speak up when she is already feeling tired. I have to be spontaneous. We go out on short dates, especially when Vin (Abrenica, his brother) comes over to the house to visit. We leave Alas to him and spend 30 minutes outside—just the two of us. It makes a big difference in our relationship.”

Now that he’s a father himself, Aljur confessed that he now finally understands his own dad. “We often clashed when I was younger. I’ve realized that everything he made me do then was because he only wanted what was best for me.”

“Asintado” is Aljur’s second big project with the Kapamilya network. He debuted in the action-drama series, “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano.”
