Independent Spirit Award nominations
Nov. 21
Championing independent films, which tend not to have the same level of funding or exposure given to big studio productions, the ISAs have frequently provided an important counterbalance to the Oscars. The awards take place on Mar. 3, 2018, one day before the Oscars.
Producers Guild Award documentary nominations
Nov. 21
Its membership consisting of professional film, TV and New Media producers, and since 2007 the Producers Guild of America’s Best Documentary Feature has lined up with the same Academy Award 50 percent of the time. Gotham Independent Film Awards Ceremony
Nov. 27
Leading this year’s nominations is neighborhood thriller “Get Out”, a first time feature from writer and director Jordan Peele. Could this be the first of many awards season appearances? “Moonlight” scooped four awards in 2016, and went on to Golden Globes and Oscar glory.
National Board of Review Awards
Nov. 28
With a membership consisting of New York area filmmakers, academics, and a selection of cineastes, the National Board of Review’s awards are best known for the annual Best Film and Top 10 Film list. Of the 11 works named in 2016, seven were then nominated to the Academy Awards’ Best Picture category.
New York Film Critics Circle Awards
Nov. 30
Thirty film reviewers and critics based in New York vote for these bellwether accolades. With multiple categories up for grabs, Oscar-watchers can typically expect winners of the NYCC’s acting sections to build momentum as awards season continues. JB
