Kim Chiu would like to believe that her singing has improved since she released her first album 10 years ago; that the tone of her voice is not as squeaky as it was; and that now that she’s older, she no longer sounds like a …
“Siguro hindi na po boses k*k*!” she blurted out, drawing laughter from the press, at the recent launch of her third and latest album, “Prinsesa Chinita: Touch of Your Love.”
Then, realizing that she was on a live stream, she quipped, “I meant my voice doesn’t sound like a kindergarten’s anymore! It has matured!”
“I have taken voice lessons, too,” added the 27-year-old actress, who stressed that she’s fully aware of her limitations as a performer.
For her, singing a Regine Velasquez song is something she would never even think of attempting.
“I know I’m not a singer, but I’m proud to say that I’m an entertainer!” she said. “And I don’t really dream of reaching high notes—‘di ko kaya ‘yun! Fortunately, there are songs out there that suit my voice.”
But still, Kim believes that there is still room for improvement, especially when it comes to performing live. “I’m not very confident onstage, whether I’m singing or dancing. I’m happy doing those things, but I still get shy and nervous. Maybe it’s because I’m an overthinker; I worry too much about what people think of me,” she related.
And there are some who wonder why she has albums, in the first place. But, she would rather take something positive out of the negative.
“They’re the ones who help me push myself to do better, so that I wouldn’t be complacent,” said Kim, whose favorite artists are Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato.
“Touch of Your Love” contains five songs—all of which talk about love and are set to simple and sweet melodies. The lead single is “Okay Na Ako,” which she picked. “‘Yun Na, You Na,” meanwhile, could be the song that best describes her rumored boyfriend, Xian Lim.
“I’m a happy person; I want to spread the good vibes through my music,” said the ABS-CBN star, who would like to dabble in songwriting someday. “The songs talk about different facets of love—happiness and contentment, having crushes, being hopeful, finding ‘the one.’”
Coming from the unexpected success of her song, “Mr. Right”—from her previous album, “Chinita Princess”—is Kim worried about scoring another hit? “There’s pressure in everything you do. But I’m hoping for the best, as I always do,” she said.
