Tragedy struck earlier this week, as veteran location scout Carlos Muñoz Portal was shot dead in Mexico after surveying the landscape for the season 4 of Netflix’s “Narcos.”

His unexpected demise has raised safety concerns for the staff of the critically acclaimed crime-drama series, which deals with the gruesome world of narco-politics.
After details of the killing emerged, Roberto De Jesus Escobar Gaviria—the brother of Narcos’ season 1 and 2 subject Pablo Escobar—issued a warning to the internet-television network about shooting in Mexico and Colombia “without authorization from Escobar Inc.”
“It is very dangerous,” the 71-year-old Colombian told the Hollywood Reporter. “Especially without our blessing. This is my country.”
The self-confessed former “chief of the hitmen” also advised Netflix officials to apply stricter security measures to make sure its Narco crew members are well protected.
“You have to eliminate all threats,” he said. “If you have the intellect, you don’t need to use weapons. If not, you have to. In this case, Netflix should provide hitmen to their people as security.”
The studio, meanwhile, released a statement regarding Munoz’s death and reminded the public to await further details regarding the case.
“We are aware of the passing of Carlos Muñoz Portal, a well-respected location scout, and send our condolences to his family. The facts surrounding his death are still unknown as authorities continue to investigate.”
