Fans are still having a hard time picturing “Mr. Robot” star Rami Malek as the iconic Freddie Mercury, when it was announced July that he will be portraying the rock legend in the upcoming biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
Although their facial structure seems to be similar, it’s quite hard to identify the Queen frontman’s signature stache on the normally clean-shaven Malek.
Entertainment Weekly finally gave us a glimpse of the 36-year-old’s latest role—complete with the late singer’s crotch-grabbing signature move.
Judging by the photo, Ramek captured not only the late frontman’s look but also his bravado, which endeared him to millions of fans in the ’80s.
“When you’re able to open your eyes and see a different person staring back at you in the mirror,” Malek recalled the first time he portrayed Mercury’s hair and makeup. “It’s a very affirming moment.”
Parts of the movie that feature singing will utilize either Malek’s own voice or recordings of Mercury, with a sound alike filling in the gaps.“We’re going to use Freddie as much as possible and use myself as much as possible,” Malek says. “I’m in Abbey Road [Studios] right now if that should say anything to you. I’m not working on my acting.”
The biggest challenge for Malek, however, would be to mimic the icon’s four-octave voice.

Meanwhile, the biopic will delve into the band’s formation in the 1970s, when Mercury first teamed up with Brian May and Roger Taylor, up until the band’s performance at Live Aid in 1985—six years before he tragically passed away due to complications from AIDS.
“X-Men Apocalypse” director Bryan Singer, who will helm the film, described it as “not a traditional biopic” but rather a story honoring the music.
“It won’t just be the dark Freddie story, but that being said, that also will be honored,” Singer said. “It’s about collaboration. It’s a celebration.”
“Bohemian Rhapsody” is expected to come out by December 2018. Khristian Ibarrola /ra
