Solenn defends living together before marriage

Living together before marriage remains a contentious issue in the Philippines today. But while Solenn Heussaff knows that it’s “not for everyone,” she thinks that her and her husband’s decision to do so has been beneficial to their relationship.

“For me, you get to know a person that way. If we didn’t live in, the adjustments we had to do could have been greater, and could have put a strain on our relationship,” she told reporters at a recent press conference for “All-Star Videoke,” which she will cohost with comedian Betong Sumaya.

“Nico is so messy. And I didn’t know that beforehand, I might have said babu!” added Solenn, who shared a home with Argentinean Nico Bolzico for about five years before tying the knot with him last year. “Now, I know who he is, so we get to compromise.

The 32-year-old Kapuso actress described her marriage with Nico as “super chill.” “That’s why it works, I feel. Makulit kami—just like friends. And we have never had a serious fight. Sometimes, I just give him the silent treatment, but that’s about it,” she related.

The couple do talk about starting their own family, but they have no immediate plans of having a baby at the moment. “I plan everything, but that’s out of the question right now. Everything at the right time,” said Solenn, who sees herself trying for a child “perhaps when I turn 34.”

“There’s a lot going on for us right now. I don’t want to rush things. We haven’t really had a lot of time together since we got married. And I want to work more,” she said.

And she’s indeed working more nowadays. Aside from “All-Star,” Solenn is part of the main cast of the second season of the primetime soap “Alyas Robin Hood.” She also hosts the lifestyle show “Taste Buddies.” “Maybe because I try to be professional; I’m always on time. I do my own hair and makeup,” surmised Solenn, when asked why she thinks the network gives her many projects.

Solenn and Nico have, as of late, become social media darlings, because of their fun Instagram stories, which show the couple pranking each other, goofing around or just going about their day. And because of Nico’s popularity online, lots of people are asking: Will he enter show biz?

“Hindi siya pwede. No, no, no!” Solenn quipped, laughing, and adding that Nico did recently get an offer for an acting gig. “I killed it! Our videos come across as fun, because we’re just at home and it’s all natural. I fear the magic will fade away if he does acting for real.”

“And he’s not interested in it anyway,” she added. “He has businesses to manage.”

In “All-Star,” which airs Sundays starting Sept. 3, celebrity contestants will try to outwit each other by filling in the missing words of a song in a videoke-type presentation. “Perhaps this is something Nico could do.”
