Phoebe Walker says she’s more than just a sexy actress

Because she has done roles in the past that required her to show some skin, Phoebe Walker often gets tagged as a “sexy actress.” Not that she minds. But she would also love to show the people that she has a lot more to offer.

“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being called a ‘sexy actress.’ A lot of artists like Jaclyn Jose did sexy roles, but ended up being one of our industry’s most acclaimed and celebrated stars,” she told the Inquirer at a recent press conference for the coming action movie, “Double Barrel: Sige, Iputok Mo.”

“Of course, I want to prove that I have talent, too. Should I end up taking on more daring projects in the future, I would see to it that it’s my acting skills that viewers would notice more,” added Phoebe, who has a degree in European Studies from Ateneo de Manila University.

Her personality is actually the opposite of what she portrays onscreen.

“I dress more modestly. I’m actually a bit of a manang or a tomboy. I barely party—I don’t drink or smoke,” she
related.

Her winning the best supporting actress award in last year’s Metro Manila Film Festival for Erik Matti’s horror film “Seklusyon” has done wonders for her career.

Not only did it give her the acting cred she had been raring for, but job offers started to get more regular, too.

“Playing Sister Cecilia in ‘Seklusyon’ was a huge blessing for me. I now get recognized for it,” Phoebe said.

However, the award did put some pressure on her shoulders. “I feel that I always have to be good, or people will think my award was undeserved,” Phoebe said, adding that she takes acting workshops regularly.

In Viva Films’ “Double Barrel,” which is directed by Toto Natividad and will open in cinemas on Aug. 2, Phoebe plays Martha, a woman forced to become a hit man of criminals involved in illegal drugs. “Doing action is new to me. And I enjoyed doing the fight scenes,” she related.

Phoebe is also set to work on a show for the video-on-demand service iFlix and the cable channel Sari-Sari.
