After garnering mixed reviews from fans and pundits alike, “Suicide Squad” still managed to earn enough to fund a sequel and it looks like the movie may have found its new director.
The 2016 superhero film based from DC’s most popular antiheroes was originally written and directed by David Ayer.
Deadline reports that the studio is now considering several candidates to helm the next project, including Hollywood royalty Mel Gibson.
The hunt for a new director could soon be coming to a close, as “The Shallows” head honcho Jaume Collet-Serra has come out as the possible choice to direct “Suicide Squad 2”.
The Spanish director first gained recognition in Hollywood for the film “Orphan”, followed by the hit survival thriller-film “The Shallows.” He is currently working on a Liam Neeson-starred movie called “The Commuter.”
Lead stars Will Smith and Margot Robbie are also expected to appear in the sequel to reprise their roles as Deadshot and Harley Quinn, respectively.
Despite the massive hype it accumulated, “Suicide Squad” was not well received by most fans, but was still able to earn $750 million globally on the box office. Given such earnings, a sequel was inevitable.
The film was inspired by a DC Comics antihero team of the same name and is part of the DC Extended Universe. It premiered in New York City on August 2016. Alfred Bayle/KI
