So, how come we aren’t surprised?

Last Nov. 27, KC Concepcion cried herself a morose and lachrymose river on “The Buzz,” finally confirming persistent rumors that her romance with Piolo Pascual had turned surly and sour—and gone kaput. This, after great efforts, largely on her part, to keep the relationship viable, despite the many problems besetting it.

So, how come we aren’t surprised?

Flashback to the first time that the then giddily loving celebrity couple first announced that they were “on.” That early, we wondered why most of the reactions to that “kilig-worthy” revelation intimated that KC was lucky to win everyone’s Papa P.

Hey, just a minute now, we protested at the time, why was it being implied that Piolo was the bigger catch? In our un-kilig view, they were both lucky.

And, in a sense, Piolo was even the luckier one, because KC came to their new relationship with her show-biz princess persona pristine and intact, while he had more excess baggage, like his love child and his “settled” stellar ways.

We were expectedly razzed by some of Piolo’s fans for that observation, but we held our ground. And, we wished the new couple well, because we knew from past, sad experience how difficult it is to keep a celebrity romance abloom, when everybody and his maiden aunt and gay tito think that running pesky, nosey interference in the affair is their business —and birthright!

Talking in code

Thus, in the succeeding weeks and months, the KC-Piolo romance went on a roller-coaster ride of happy highs and sullen lows, occasionally laced with titillating tidbits which gave the impression that, while love was still in the air, the romance wasn’t as roseate as before, because “expectations,” generally from KC’s corner, weren’t being met.

Was Piolo, as earlier feared, too set in his ways to accommodate his younger and more romantic inamorata?

When KC talked about the troubled romance, it was “in code,” because she didn’t want to hurt anybody—so little truly clarifying help could be had.  Thus, the situation continued to degenerate and fester until KC tearfully and with finality revealed that the bloom was off the rose between her and him.

Unfortunately, even as she weepily tried to explain why they had decided to call it quits, KC provided precious few facts and details that truly clarified the situation enough for viewers to understand why she had decided to end the relationship, beyond a general perception of pain, frustrated expectations and an insufficient fusion of hearts and minds.

Was she still trying to make sure that nobody got hurt, even if it was obvious that she herself was emotionally black-and-blue?

She did, for the first time, lose her signature cool and show-biz politesse, confessed that she was angry and declared that “PJ knows exactly what led to the breakup.” But, most of her other “revelations” were still couched in “code”—so, the “true confession” ended with viewers still in the dark, groping for the light.

Well, if that’s all that the parties involved want to share, that’s ultimately their business —even if this business is one of show and tell.
