Zac Efron has shed his Disney “boy-next-door” image, taking on raunchy and more mature roles in recent years.
But perhaps his most challenging depiction comes in the upcoming film “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile”, as he is set to play one of America’s most infamous serial killers.
The 29-year-old “High School Musical” star will portray the role of Ted Bundy—one of the most notorious killers-rapists of the 20th century.
The upcoming thriller will delve into the perspective of Bundy’s stubbornly loyal girlfriend Elizabeth Kloepfer, Variety reported.
“I have been trying to work with Zac Efron for a long time,” one of the film’s producers, Nicolas Chartier, was quoted as saying in the report.
“From his dramatic turn in ‘Paperboy’ to his hilarious performance in ‘Neighbors’, he continues to impress audiences and critics alike with his extraordinary versatility and range. We couldn’t be more excited to see him in this amazing role.”
Aside from his improved acting chops, Efron’s charms certainly fits the bill of the criminal mastermind, who used his good-looks to lure over 30 female victims.
The film is also expected to showcase Bundy’s evasion from law enforcement—including jumping from a second-story court house window and sawing his way out of prison.
“Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile” will be directed by Joe Berlinger (“Paradise Lost”) and is expected to start shooting this October. Khristian Ibarrola/JB
