A second trailer for “The Mummy”–rebooting Universal’s monster franchise–reveals a little more about the infamous mummy, awoken from a 2,000-year slumber and ready to wreak vengeance on the modern world.
Universal Pictures is actively stepping up promotion on “The Mummy,” which lands in US theaters June 9. After a poster and a first trailer, the studio has dropped a second trailer showing moviegoers who’s behind the terrifying beast. Franco-Algerian actress Sofia Boutella–previously seen in “Kingsman” and “Star Trek Beyond”–plays Ahmanet, an ancient Egyptian princess brutally deprived of her chance to become queen.
Now, 2,000 years later, the princess’s wrath is awoken by Nick Morton, a US soldier on a mission in the desert, played by Tom Cruise, and her terrifying mummy is out for revenge.
Universal Pictures called on Alex Kurtzman–a longtime partner of J.J. Abrams (“Alias,” “Mission: Impossible 3,” “Star Trek”)–to dust off this particular monster myth. “The Mummy” will be his second full-length feature film after “People Like Us” in 2012.

“The Mummy” launches Universal’s rebooted franchise dedicated to the legendary monsters of the movie world. Dracula, Frankenstein and the Invisible Man can all be revived as part of the studio’s Monster Cinematic Universe.
Universal Pictures has even added references to other monster tales in “The Mummy,” potentially hinting at characters due to return to the big screen. Russell Crowe, for example, plays a certain Dr. Jekyll in the film.
