The spirit of awe and wonder is making its way back to sci-fi adventure films. Thanks to the success of “Guardians of the Galaxy”, audiences could be seeing more fantastic aliens, even more fantastic fashion, and out of-this-world hair styles.

Directed by Luc Besson, whose signature action films include the 1990s hitman cult classic “Leon” (a.k.a. “The Professional”), “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” is inspired by a 1960s French comic called Valérian et Laureline, reports Ars Technica.

Besson is also teaming up again with comic strip artist and illustrator Jean-Claude Mézières, famed for his colorful style, to create this film. Mézières was also onboard with Besson when another of the filmmaker’s classics, “The Fifth Element”, was created.

Based on the source material’s lore, Valerian is a 28th century spatio-temporal agent. His companion, Laureline, is a peasant girl from 11th century France, whom he has trained to be an agent like him.

For audiences who may have had too much dystopian sci-fi movies to watch recently, this colorful new look into the future might just turn out to be a refreshing sight. Alfred Bayle/JB
