Filipino filmmaker Lav Diaz’s 2012 documentary, “Pagsisiyasat sa Gabing Ayaw Lumimot (An Investigation on the Night That Won’t Forget)” can now be seen on the web site Mubi, as part of the yearlong retrospective dubbed “It’s About Time: The Cinema of Lav Diaz.”
The docu, which is available on the site until March 10, is Diaz’s tribute to film critics Alexis Tioseco and Nika Bohinc, who were murdered by still-unknown assailants in 2009.
The first part of the docu features an interview with the slain couple’s friend, film scorer Erwin Romulo, and the second section shows various street scenes—culminating in a “minutes-long shot of a procession of people … streaming through the night, holding candles.”
The site points out: “These people likely know nothing of Nika and Alexis, but may have their own unforgettable nights burned into memory.”
According to the site, Diaz’s body of work “is a bulwark against time, against memory … cinema is living memory.”
Mubi is a web site that specializes in art house cinema and has been described as an “online cinematheque.”
Mubi is available in over 200 territories all over the world. —BAYANI SAN DIEGO JR.
