Why does actor Sam Milby liken himself to Hong Kong superstar Jackie Chan?

Sam explained why at a recent press gathering for the Kapamilya afternoon drama series “Doble Kara,” which will air its final episode on Feb. 10.

Even though he has been in show business for 11 years now, Sam admitted that he still struggles with the Filipino language.

In the same vein, Jackie still finds it difficult to express himself in

English, even after being part of several Hollywood films. The honorary Oscar awardee’s latest action-comedy film, “Kung Fu Yoga,” is now screening in local cinemas.

“I saw the film’s teaser. I can relate to him in that sense,” said Sam. “I started learning Filipino a little late—at 21. Prior to that, I’ve never known any other language but English. I want to express myself in Filipino, but I  always doubt whether or not I am saying things right.”

The Filipino-American actor said he is thankful to his “Doble Kara” coactors and directors for their patience.

He explained: “An actor normally studies the script, then understands how a given situation makes him feel. For me, it’s more difficult. I still have to study the right way to pronounce words after I’ve memorized my lines. In front of the camera, it becomes hard for me to express my emotions while choosing the right Filipino words to say.”

On having a girlfriend after being single for six long years, he said it takes a little getting used to.

“It certainly feels very different to be introducing someone as my girlfriend,” said Sam, who confirmed his relationship with Filipino-British model and food blogger Mari Jasmine in July 2016.

Sam, 32, refused to reveal how “serious” his relationship with Mari Jasmine has become. However, he stated: “We’re enjoying our time together. We’re still learning a lot about each other. That should be our main priority at the moment.”

Mari Jasmine, 21, is currently working in Paris, France. “We don’t want to rush things. We shouldn’t feel pressured in that sense,” declared Sam.

In  “Doble Kara,” Sam plays Seb, the husband of Kara, who is one of two characters portrayed by Julia Montes. He explained that the spouses are going through tough times, but remain patient and faithful to each other. This is something that Sam hopes to bring into his real-life relationship.

He pointed out: “Two people in love can overcome any problem as long as they continue to be hopeful and patient.”

As to what makes him and Mari Jasmine click, Sam revealed: “We have a lot in common. We’re both health buffs. We have the same political views. We like watching the news and… [to] be updated on what’s happening. Like me, she’s musically inclined.”
