It is high time the spotlight be focused also on our indie bands and acts. They form a deep well of diverse and amazing talents in the local scene. I will be showcasing once in a while an indie band or act that to my mind deserves a look and more attention. So below, let’s get to know MITHI.
1. What is the origin of your band?
Allen Mamaid – The band started 11 years ago (September 28th 2005), formed by our drummer, Jonah Ruiz who was studying at the University of Santo Tomas (at that time) along with Gec Pobre (Rhythm Guitar), Rigil Borromeo (Lead Guitar), and Rolan Bagatua (Flute and Keys). The band experienced line-up changes as time went on. Geno Garcia is already our second bassist and me being the third Mithi vocalist.
MITHI. “Bakit Mithi?” A lot of people tend to ask what was the name all about. Rigil named the band “Mithi” to also describe the group’s sound, Dreamy. Plus, Iisa kami ng Minimithi.
2. What are the band’s musical influences?
Allen Mamaid – Jeff Buckley, Dave Matthews, Tori Amos, Sixpence None the Richer, Tool, A Perfect Circle, Cynthia Alexander, etc.
3. Can you describe your style of music to the unfamiliar?
Allen Mamaid – Experimental. People may hear a bit of pop, jazz, alternative, rock on each of our songs. A result of our wide range of musical influence.
4. What do you think of the current local scene?
Allen Mamaid – On an artist’s perspective, the Local Band scene is pretty much alive and kicking.
5. Any upcoming gigs you would like to promote?
Allen Mamaid – We have no upcoming bar gigs yet (but we do hope to have some after this article comes out. Hahaha). Most of our gigs within the past few months were private gigs (company events and wedding gigs etc.) As of the moment, we are working on our new songs for our planned EP projected for this year.
