There seems to be no end in sight for the growing popularity of runaway hit “Kimi no Na wa (Your Name.)” as it overtakes one of Studio Ghibli’s highest-earning feature films in terms of overall earnings.
Having stayed on top of the charts for weeks, the film managed to earn 19,492,000,000 yen (about P8.6 billion) as of Sunday. This surpassed the 19.3 billion yen earnings of “Princess Mononoke” from Studio Ghibli, reports Anime News Network.
“Kimi no Na wa” is now considered as the sixth-highest-grossing film of all time in Japan and the third-highest-grossing Japanese film in Japan. The two current highest Japanese films are “Spirited Away” and “Howl’s Moving Castle,” which earned 30.8 billion and 19.6 billion yen, respectively. It is being projected that Makoto Shinkai’s film would reach 20 billion yen.
The film managed to hold the top spot on the chart for nine weeks, stepping down to second spot briefly when “Death Note: Light Up the New World” premiered, then regaining the throne for the 11th, 12 and 13th weeks, and then stepping down again to 2nd after “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.”
While local cinema houses have yet to make an official announcement for a Philippine premiere, Pioneer Films announced earlier through CinemaBravo.com that Kimi no Na wa was being pegged for a December debut in the country. Alfred Bayle
