With so many reality shows already on the tube for years, you’d think that the last thing the Kardashian TV clan needs is yet another tell-all and show-all production!
But that’s exactly what the “K” gang has just whipped up, in ostensibly new, daring and boring reality romp—this time, into the public and private parameters of the only “thorn” among the family’s reeking roses, Rob Kardashian, and his preggy “baby mama,” Blac Chyna.
For many years, Rob was literally the “odd son out” in the “K” family, a nice enough but unfocused youth who was completely upstaged by his sizzling sisters.
Then, a couple of seasons ago, his life and prospects took on a darker and more rebellious turn, prompting him to sever ties with most of his celebrity relatives and hook up with some starlets.
Hot and bothered
Most recently, he got all hot and bothered over Blac Chyna and got her pregnant, generating tabloid headlines that, in turn, have led to the production of their new reality spinoff show, “Rob and Chyna.”
We caught the show last Tuesday to find out what all the fuss and buzz was about, and our conclusion was—not much.
The production did try to whip up a soupçon of frisson and conflict by arranging for a dinner that reunited Chyna with her many half-siblings.
The dinner was also graced by Rob and Chyna’s “player” dad and mom, Tokyo Toni, who hadn’t seen each other for years and years.
Talk about friction and frisson, the set-up encounter delivered in heaps, with Blac Chyna’s mom getting all freaked out when she belatedly learned that her only daughter was the same age as two of her half-siblings (by other women)! That’s how much of a “player” her prodigiously fertile dad had been!
Benumbing bore
Despite this confrontational scene and other attention-grabbing gambits like Chyna visiting her sexy stripper haunts, however, the episode was generally a benumbing bore.
The biggest culprit was Rob himself, because he was often uncooperative and uncommunicative, with a chip on his shoulder that refused to be chipped off.
We kept complaining that Chyna and her folks were trying too hard to take him out of his “comfort zone,” but viewers didn’t know what the hoo-hah he was muttering about.
If all he wanted to do was live in a cave, why did he agree to star in a big, daring and baring reality TV show?
Vibrant sensation
Blac Chyna may not have much going for her, but compared to the grumpily reluctant Rob, she was a scintillating, vibrant sensation, putting up with his “angst-sy” antics and coming up with pithily colorful comments that sometimes perked up with generally predictable proceedings.
It turns out that Blac Chyna was born Angels Renee White and is a model and “video vixen,” with frequent gigs on hip-hop MTVs.
She was once hired as Nicki Minaj’s stunt double on a rap music video, has come up with her own fashion and cosmetic lines, opened her own “lash bar” and hooked up with rapper Tyga before living in with Rob.
Clearly, she isn’t just a clueless chick and, with or without Rob, intends to be in the bright and brittle biz—to stay!
