Even when she’s sick and tired, Ellen DeGeneres still forces herself to do her daily TV show. So, she must have been really indisposed last week, because she passed up the telecast of “Ellen,” and turned hosting chores for the day over to—Miley Cyrus.
It was an honor for smiley Miley to be tapped by Ellen to stand in for her—and she made sure that everybody realized what a big deal it was. She preened, crowed and cackled like a hen who’d just laid—an ostrich egg!
Alas, it was too much ado over little. Miley turned out to be a non-hosting discovery, because she kept yakking about herself and what she felt and thought, instead of focusing on her guest interviewees—which is what good TV talk show hosts are supposed to do!
Another problem is the fact that Miley has been trying, for several seasons now, to transform herself from sweet and bubbly teen star to hot, controversial superstar.
She’s been doing this by way of shocking antics and statements, cynically calculated to make headlines and hog the show biz buzz.
The make-or-break gambit has had some effect, but it’s turned off a number of people, because it’s been so shrilly radical. It’s also made the “new” Miley come off as a gung ho shocker who suspects that she may not be all that talented, so she’s now relying more on guts and gumption to see her through.
Well, the gutsy gambit has had some positive effect, like Ellen’s decision to get Miley to fill her hosting shoes for a day. That is a feather in Ms Cyrus’ career cap—except for the fact that hosting efforts last week were generally for naught.
More positively, the “new” Miley has been tapped to join the judging and mentoring panel on “The Voice,” with Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and Alicia Keys. That’s a very prestigious assignment, so Miley can’t be blamed for crowing and cackling loudly about that, too!
Sadly, however, even that career coup is similarly failing to fly, because Miley has been trying too hard to measure up to the top singing tilt’s high judging standards.
Some of her judging and mentoring notes have passed muster, but what’s throwing some viewers and Miley’s co-judges off is her constant need to call attention to herself, at all cost.
What took the cake on the talent tilt recently was her decision to make a far-out “fashion” statement by doing the show in a denim outfit festooned with fake flowers, from top to bottom.
Yes, it was a fun, “gaga” gambit, but it made her look “TH,” an attention junkie who will do anything to upstage everybody else!
The other jurors took it in stride, and Blake even joined in on the fun by later also wearing a flower-festooned jacket of his own.
But, what’s really getting their goat is Miley’s similarly self-serving penchant for yakking all the time—about herself and her “insights” on good performance.
They’re still “jokingly complaining” about it, but we fear that it won’t be long before they reach their tolerance limit and pointedly tell her to shut the heck up.
