Award-winning Pinoy jazz man home for benefit show

Award-winning United States-based Filipino jazz singer Mon David comes home for a benefit concert on November 12 at 8 p.m. at the Genting Club, Resorts World Manila.

A veteran session musician before going solo, David won the London International Jazz Vocal Competition in 2006, besting 106 contestants from 27 countries. He was signed by the United Kingdom-based record label Candid and released the album “My One and Only Love.” He then moved with his family to Southern California where he concentrated on singing in local clubs.

He has also performed with the likes of David Benoit, Eric Marienthal, Tina May, Lee Gibson, Bobby Enriquez, Boney James, Peter White and the Pete Churchill Trio, among others.

His guests at the Genting Club show are the AMP Band, Skarlet, and Nicole and Carlo.

All-’80s concert

Lou Bonnevie, Chad Borja, Gino Padilla, Jamie Rivera, Ella Mae Saison and Juan Miguel Salvador perform together in “80289” (“Eighty to Eighty-Nine”), a concert series featuring an all-1980s repertoire on November 11, 12, 18 and 19 at the Music Museum.

KC Montero makes a cameo appearance as “DJ Casey Kasem” in this tribute to an era that saw the birth of MTV, the explosion of punk and New Wave music and fashion, among other trends.

Something Special returns

Something Special, the pop group that became a top attraction of clubs here and around Asia, has reunited and is now playing regularly every Friday at Bistro Miyake on Annapolis St. in Greenhills, San Juan.

The group, which was formed by the second-generation members of the New Minstrels, recorded the “English OPM” hits “Smile” and “I Don’t Love You Anymore.” It won second place at the 3rd Metro Pop Music Festival for the song “Ikaw, Ako, Tayo, Magkakapatid.”

Its current members include vocalists Grace Pimentel, Arlene Arcilla and Dong Fernando, guitarist/vocalist Bert Escario, bassist Rolly Abalos, drummer Ariel Vitan and keyboardist Dodong Salcedo Jr.

Cuban-American rapper, songwriter and record producer Pitbull performs on November 30, 8 p.m., at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Go West in 2 gigs

British pop duo Go West, best known for the 1980s hits “King of Wishful Thinking” and “We Close Our Eyes,” performs on November 11 in Eastwood City, Libis, Quezon City, and November 12 at Venice Piazza in McKinley Hill, Bonifacio Global City. Call 709-0888.
