SEOUL—After proving that there’s still demand for the Jason Bourne film franchise at the box office, does series star Matt Damon see the embattled former spy collaborating with, say, Aaron Cross, portrayed by Jeremy Renner in 2012’s “The Bourne Legacy”?
“I don’t mind if the film’s producers build a whole universe [that comes out of Jason’s story]. If they want to do that, that makes total sense to me. It’s their property, so it’s up to them whatever they want to do with it,” Matt told the Inquirer in South Korea early this month. “But I’m not sure if I’d be willing to interact with that. Our story has always been a very personal one—it’s about Jason’s journey. So, I don’t see a world where Bourne starts teaming up with other people.
“In the beginning, they pitched the ‘Bourne’ series to me like the reverse of how ‘X-Men’ had been played out. You’ve got a spinoff like ‘Wolverine,’ or ‘Deadpool.’ ‘Jason Bourne’ is basically the reverse—like, it starts with Wolverine’s story. We’d like to build a universe that unmasks the CIA’s different black-ops programs. Bourne knows about Treadstone and Blackbriar, but there are, like, 20 other programs that he may know nothing about that other people are in!” Rito P. Asilo
