What politicians in show biz think of the latest Sona

IT’S BEEN exactly a week since President Duterte’s very first State of the Nation Address (Sona). Have we, as citizens, done our homework so far in helping make change happen?

Previous Sonas left us Pinoys muttering, “Sana, sana…” But this time around, change will be “soon na.”

Digong means business. His actions jibe with his words. He broke every Sona rule (in the way his barong was unbuttoned, in his ad libs and in keeping the affair simple) as he reminded us to follow the law to the letter.

I cornered some celebs who are also public servants for their sentiments about the President’s Sona. May they render award-winning services even when there are no lights and cameras:

Vilma Santos (representative of the sixth district of Batangas): Very candid and natural. He’s serious about his priority programs, especially peace and order. I support his strong economic agenda and tax reforms.

I like the fact that he has no vindictiveness, and his idea of federalism. It will definitely improve Filipinos’ lives if his plans push through. As a neophyte [in Congress], I will support his 10-point agenda.

Lucy Torres (representative of the fourth district of Leyte): President Duterte came across as very down-to-earth. His Sona shows his empathetic skills in governance, and his grasp of what’s happening in our communities is reassuring.

We’re lucky to have a leader who is decisive and efficient. Not only does he have a dream for our country, he also has a clear plan of action.

Jestoni Alarcon (provincial board member of Rizal): His Sona was clear and direct to the point. What struck me were his statements about less income tax, fast transportation through railways, immediate solution to traffic, no demolition of informal settlers while there is no relocation [site], and intense campaign against drugs.

Monsour del Rosario (representative of the first district of Makati): Very inspiring, positive and solid! He’s got a warrior’s heart. I could feel his sincerity across the room.

Alfred Vargas (representative of the fifth district, Quezon City): I have attended four Sonas, and this one is the most candid and entertaining. Two things struck me the most: “peace for the living” and lowering of income and corporate taxes.

I agree with the President. Simpler tax measures should be enacted, procurement laws should be amended, the environment should be protected from mining corporations, and a comprehensive Mindanao economic development plan will boost the country’s growth.

All of these are anchored on how the legislative performance of the 17th Congress would fare.

Cristina Gonzales-Romualdez (mayor of Tacloban City): I enjoyed listening to the President’s Sona. In my opinion, it was one of the best Sonas I have ever heard. He has true compassion for the people.
