Meryl Streep to join cast of ‘Mary Poppins Returns’

Critically acclaimed actress Meryl Streep is set to join the “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” Poppins family with stars Emily Blunt and Lin Manuel-Miranda in the upcoming Mary Poppins sequel, “Mary Poppins Returns.”

The three-time Oscar awardee will play the role of Topsy, Mary’s cousin, a role omitted in the 1964 classic. Also, the 67-year-old actress will sing momentous pieces in the film, according to Hollywood news site Variety.

Disney announced last month that Blunt, 33, will succeed Julie Andrews’ Mary Poppins while Miranda, the 36-year-old star of Broadway musical “Hamilton,” will enact the role of Jack.

Streep will reunite once again with Blunt, director Rob Marshall and producers Marc Platt and John DeLuca, whom she worked with in the 2014 musical “Into the Woods,” E! Online reported. Both actresses co-starred in the 2006 film “The Devil Wears Prada.”

The much-awaited “Mary Poppins” sequel will unfold a grown-up Jane and Michael Banks, as they were visited by Poppins in their home in London during the Great Depression period.

All seven novels of “Mary Poppins” were authored by P.L. Travers in 1934. The original Disney film adaption, which bagged five Academy awards and was first shown in August 1964, paved Andrews’ career to ultimate stardom.
