FIFTH HARMONY. Waxes string of pop charmers in “7/27.”
THE LOVELY quintet of Fifth Harmony has a string of pop charmers in its sophomore album, “7/27”—from the fun and flirtatious, reggae-fueled “All In My Head (Flex)” and the reassuring warmth of “Gonna Get Better,” to the comforting midtempo patter of “Squeeze.”
But, “The X Factor USA” alumnae made up of Ally Brooke, Dinah Jane, Camila Cabello, Normani Kor-dei and Lauren Jauregui give their crowd-pleasing cachet a bigger boost with the recording’s top tracks: The infectious “Work From Home” (featuring rapper Ty Dolla Sign) and “Not That Kinda Girl,” with spitfire Missy Elliott in tow.
“Not That Kinda Girl” is a cleverly imagined throwback to the pounding dance sizzlers of Janet Jackson and the fearless female-empowerment anthems of Vanity and Apollonia Kotero, from Prince’s bevy of voluptuous singing vixens.
Even catchier is “Work From Home,” recently dubbed by Entertainment Weekly as one of 2016’s best singles so far, bolstered by an unshakable hook and a sexy theme—about a woman who knows what she wants—and gets it!
