OUR RECENT feature on Heart Evangelista elicited requests for more information about her “alternative” career as a visual artist. First, here’s an image of one of her artworks, which have been exhibited both locally and regionally, and have gotten good reviews.
As you can see, Heart has a distinct visual style that makes her images stand out. She doesn’t come up with slapdash work, but takes time to creatively “achieve” her artistic vision. In addition, the actress-painter has also gone into painting on designer bags to make them truly unique.
We also cited Kuh Ledesma as a visual artist. We were very taken when we saw a painting by her some months ago that had a “cogon” motif that was beautifully stylized—and rendered even more ethereally captivating by gold and silver flecks.
Further expanding our appreciation of stars who paint, we recall that Maria Isabel Lopez once gifted us with an “appropriately” sexy sketch of a nude woman—a self-portrait, perhaps?
And we once attended an exhibit at the Ayala Museum of Cesar Montano’s paintings, in which his big canvas showcasing the stylized and abstracted image of a carabao stood out.

More: Acclaimed director Al Quinn is a gifted visual artist as well, as is TV-film director Peque Gallaga. Their detailed works indicate that they are by no means just “Sunday” painters, and help explain why the visual element is such a striking part of their productions.
Of all the “stars who paint,” the one we admire most is the late, great actor, Johnny Delgado, who painted many exceptional canvases—which we hope will get the big retrospective exhibition they deserve this year!
