Spielberg says ‘BFG’ is closest he’s come to ‘a love story’

CANNES, France — Steven Spielberg has premiered his Roald Dahl adaptation “The BFG” at the Cannes Film Festival, where he said the film is “the closest I’ve ever come to a love story.”
The film marks a return for Spielberg to a magical kind of fable that he has largely moved away from in recent years. It’s also his second film with “E.T.” writer Melissa Mathison, who died last November.
Sitting Saturday between his young star, Ruby Barnhill, and his friendly giant, the recent Oscar-winner Mark Rylance, Spielberg said tales like “The BFG” are always important.
“The worse the world gets, the more we need magic,” he said.
The 69-year-old director sounded no less enthralled by moviemaking. Spielberg said he’ll be doing it “for the rest of my life.” TVJ
