AlDub flexes its box-office muscle

RICHARDS AND MENDOZA. Force to reckon with.

RICHARDS AND MENDOZA. Force to reckon with.

Marilyn Morales, accountant: “The AlDub tandem of Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza is currently flexing its muscle at the box office, with their  ‘My Bebe Love’ edging out perennial winner Vice Ganda’s entry, ‘Beauty and the Bestie.’ This proves that the so-called ‘AlDub nation’ is truly a force to reckon with.”

Other notes:

Dante Lugo, college professor: “There’s no doubt that Jericho Rosales (“Santa Santita,” “Alagwa”) and John Lloyd Cruz (“Honor Thy Father”) are two of the best actors of their generation. So, why not cast them together in a film reminiscent of Lino Brocka’s ‘Cain at Abel?’”

Raffy Manzano, businessman: “After 42 years, the country has finally produced its third Miss Universe in Pia Alonzo Wurztbach. Unfortunately, we aren’t as lucky in our quest for a best foreign language Oscar nod.

Selection process

“Perhaps it’s high time to rethink the selection process, giving weight to films that are already doing the rounds of international festivals, like ‘Thy Womb’ and ‘Taklub.’”

Teresita Aday, housewife: “I was  a big  fan of the once-popular singing contest, ‘Tawag ng Tanghalan’—that’s why I welcome the news about its return to television—never mind if it’s only a segment on ‘It’s Showtime.’”
