LOS ANGELES—We look back at 2015 and share some of the year’s quotable quotes in our interviews with the stars—from Angelina Jolie to Jennifer Lawrence.
Angelina Jolie: The biggest change for me was when I signed over the papers, and Brad officially adopted Zahara and Maddox. That was the day when I realized that suddenly, I was tying myself to this man for the rest of my life. That was many years ago.
Carrie Fisher (On what advice she would give to her young self): Oh, my God. Don’t do anything you want to do. Your impulses are wrong!
(On her hair in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”): I have a new hairstyle very briefly, but it reminds me of a baboon a**, so that is the next level for me.
Leonardo DiCaprio: I am not the most spiritual or meditative person out there, but I know that I need those moments of contemplation to get the right answers. I need to drown out all the different clatter and noise that this world can infuse into your mind.
Jennifer Lawrence: On my strength, I’ve been alone, pretty much. I left home when I was 14, so I was alone a lot and I was in New York and it was scary. I was raised by rats (laughs)—and that’ll toughen you up!
Sam Smith: I came out to my mom when I was 10—but, I didn’t actually have to come out. My coming-out story is very disappointing. I told my mom I was gay, and she was like, “We know.”
Sylvester Stallone: Love has the ability to take you to heaven and unfortunately, take you to hell, too.
Michael Fassbender (On when he realized that he wanted to be an actor): When there were no other choices around (laughs).
Lea Salonga (On George Takei, her “Allegiance” costar): He truly was one of the very first who blazed the trail for the rest of us. Being around him is so special, and the impact he’s had… given how many Asian actors there are in the show… it’s safe to say our careers are possible because of people like him. Imagine George making his Broadway debut at the age of 78.
Tom Hanks (On Steven Spielberg directing “Bridge of Spies”): Steven has the ability to make drama out of a ringing telephone and waiting.
Lady Gaga: Since the beginning, I have always thought to myself, if I am ever to be on a stage, whether it be in front of five, 10 or 50,000 people, I will always be honest with my convictions as a woman and a human being. I’ve never done anything that I didn’t want to do—meaning, I have never done anything that I didn’t think the message was powerful for young people, even if it was veiled or twisted, or perhaps through some sort of ironic, satirical moment.
Mamie Gummer (On her mom Meryl Streep): My mom likes to sing. She sings all the time—in the car, kitchen, stairwell. It used to be irritating. She has often said she does it for the movies, and we aren’t allowed to stop her because she has to do it for work.
Meryl Streep: Sometimes, life throws you stuff that seems hard at first, but it turns out to be the right thing, deeply and wonderfully.
Woody Allen: I have always been obsessed with mortality since I was 5 years old. I [didn’t] plan anything (to celebrate turning 80 on Dec. 1) because I don’t like that. There is a sadness when people get together and they say, “Well, now you are 70, 80 or 90.” People drink, celebrate and there’s a great exchange of insincerities all over the place. It’s not for me.
Harrison Ford: I did say that I wanted Han Solo to die in the original… George (Lucas) said no.
