Asian horror-fantasy world in ‘Halfworlds’

Directed by Indonesian filmmaker Joko Anwar and developed in-house, the eight-part hour-long series, “Halfworlds,” is a dark thriller starring an ensemble cast of Asian actors.

A fantastical tale of love, redemption and betrayal set in present-day Jakarta, the miniseries is about a young street artist who uncovers her true origins when she finds herself unwittingly caught in a battle between humans and demons.

In the streets and back alleys of Jakarta, a parallel world of bloodthirsty creatures from Indonesian mythology has lived alongside humans for generations. Taking on the appearance of humans themselves, their true identities have been carefully concealed for centuries by a powerful family of mortals.

The arrival of a mysterious supernatural event known only as the “Gift” will bring this hidden world to the surface.

Written by Anwar and Collin Chang, “Halfworlds” is produced by HBO Asia with Infinite Studios. It was filmed in Batam and Jakarta.

The miniseries (airs Sundays, 10 p.m.) is HBO Asia’s fourth original production after “Dead Mine” (2012), “Serangoon Road” (2013) and “Grace” (2014).
