Yuletide ‘war’ at the tills

Danny Castro, businessman: “Which film will emerge as the top grosser in the Metro Manila film fest this year? The hottest tandem of the season, Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza aka AlDub, will be featured in ‘My Bebe Love,’ a Vic Sotto-Ai-Ai de las Alas starrer.

“Will the tandem’s immense popularity catapult their film to the top of the box office? I am sure Vice Ganda, who headlines ‘Beauty and the Bestie’ with Coco Martin, will put up a good fight. —It’ll still be ‘It’s Showtime’ versus ‘Eat Bulaga’ this December!”

Other notes:

Edwin Aquino, engineer: “Give students a 50-percent ticket discount, and they will come! Surprisingly, this promo worked for ‘Heneral Luna,’ which enjoyed a nine-week commercial run—a rare feat for an independent film. But, it should also be emphasized that the historical biopic is well-made.

“More good news—the film is reportedly doing well in the United States, where it’s currently showing. It also received rave reviews from some critics there. I hope it also does well in the country’s quest for the elusive Oscar!”

Positive demeanor

Evelyn Buena, televiewer: “Seeing Mariel Rodriguez again as one of the hosts of the just-concluded ‘Pinoy Big Brother’ was a thrill! She’s one of my favorite TV hosts because of her bubbly and positive demeanor. She deserves to be back in the limelight, especially after suffering two miscarriages.”

Rafael Datu, student: “One of the scenes that caught my attention in a recent ‘Ang Probinsiyano’ episode was the wake of Coco Martin’s twin brother character. Bela Padilla as the wife was subtly moving. She’s one of few actresses who look great even during crying scenes.”

Sonia Catalan, housewife: “Why doesn’t ‘TV Patrol’s’ Noli de Castro use reading glasses? It would minimize his gaffes. Recently, he said city ‘dealers’ instead of ‘dwellers.’”
