JAY-R didn’t know he had a hidden talent for imitating other singers.

With a new album out and his participation in a recent TV talent tilt sparking renewed interest in his music, singer-songwriter Jay-R said it’s about time to hold another major solo concert—his first in many years—because, this time, he feels he’s got ample “ammunition.”

“My last two albums prior to my latest one, ‘Elevated,’ were  composed mostly of revivals; I didn’t want to do a concert doing covers,” he said in a recent media gathering for “Press Play,” his two-night show on Nov. 6 and 7 at the Music Museum. “Of course, fans would like to go and hear your songs.”

Coming off from a strong showing in ABS-CBN’s “Your Face Sounds Familiar,” where he finished third, the R&B artist said it would be only wise to capitalize on the exposure he got from the program.

“People are starting to get familiar again with my work. And I definitely gained more fans,” he said, adding that he made sure he had already released his all-original album before joining “Your Face.”

“My stint in the contest helped my latest album reach gold status, and I’m so happy about that since it’s difficult to achieve that these days,” he said.

“I’ve learned a lot of things that I can apply in my own shows… I can now incorporate that raspy tone usually heard in alternative rock music. I didn’t know that I had a hidden talent for imitating other singers,” Jay-R said. “I’ve also learned to communicate and connect better with an audience.”

Joining him onstage are Dee Jay Poblete, Q-York, Kris Lawrence and his girlfriend, Mica Javier. The repertoire, Jay-R said, will be focused on urban and R&B music.

But can fans expect him to pull off an impersonation act? “That will be a surprise!”

Aside from his music career, the 34-year-old artist has his hands full managing his own label, “Homeworkz,” which currently has eight talents on its roster. “There’s a lot going on, but it’s all about time management. I give my best and stay professional,” he said.
