On Thursday, a documentary on the late action star Rudy Fernandez formally opened this year’s QCinema International Film Festival (QCIFF), which runs until Oct. 31 at TriNoma, Gateway and Robinsons Galleria cinemas.

“The Last Pinoy Action King,” a poignant portrait of Daboy (Fernandez’s nickname), was codirected by internationally acclaimed filmmakers Andrew Leavold and Daniel Palisa.

QCIFF worked with a wide range of local and international partners in coming up with a well-curated movie selection. This year, the festival will present additional movie categories aside from Circle Competition and DoQC International Documentary.

The Circle Competition lineup includes Lemuel Lorca’s “Water Lemon,” Pepe Diokno’s “Kapatiran,” Chuck Gutierrez’s “Iisa,” Mihk Vergara’s “Patintero: Ang Alamat ni Meng Patalo,” Cesar Hernando’s “Gayuma,” Jet Leyco’s “Matangtubig,” Monster Jimenez and Mario Cornejo’s “Apocalypse Child,” and Prime Cruz’s “Sleepless.”

The selected documentary film finalists in the DoQC International Documentary section are: Perry Dizon’s “Of Cats, Dogs, Farm Animals, and Sashimi”; Sheron Dayoc’s “The Crescent Rising”; Universe Baldoza’s “Audio Perpetua”;  Will Fredo’s “Traslacion: Ang Paglakad sa Altar ng Alanganin”; and Choy Pangilinan, Qubry Quesada, Joolia Demigillo and Abet Umil’s “Bingat.”

Screen International will also present award-winning films from all over the world. Rainbow QC will screen films on the different faces of sexuality and sensuality.

Mark Osborne’s “The Little Prince,” a French fantasy film loosely based on the book of the same name, will be shown in the Special Children’s Screening. This is co-presented with the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board. Other titles in this section are Michel Gondry’s “Microbe and Gasoline” and Will Fredo’s “Filemon Mamon.”

The Iranian vampire film Ana Lily Amirpour’s “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night” will serve as centerpiece of QCIFF’s special Halloween screening.

The QCinema Awards Night will be held at the QC Interactive Museum on Oct. 28.
