MMDA Chair Francis Tolentino was the Bulong Pulungan forum’s guest speaker recently. He enlightened participants about the Valley Fault System, and what to expect if a strong earthquake strikes the metropolis.

There will be an earthquake-preparedness drill on July 30, so Tolentino asks everyone to cooperate: Each individual should have a backpack containing a battery-operated radio, flashlight with extra batteries, knife, can opener, chocolates, medicine and first-aid kit, blanket, clothes and water.

What should we do when the ground begins to shake? Stay calm, drop to the floor and take cover under a sturdy desk. Stay away from glass windows, shelves and other heavy objects.

Quickly open a door to exit. Move to an open space. Stay away from trees, posts, concrete structures and power lines. If you’re on the beach, move quickly to higher ground.

If you’re in a moving vehicle, stop and get out. Don’t attempt to cross bridges and flyovers. Above all, don’t panic. It pays to be prepared!
