“Finally, I’m coming over,” said Australian pop singer Cody Simpson, who’s looking forward to experiencing a “new culture” and meeting his “incredible” fans in his first visit to Manila next month.
The 18-year-old artist, who first landed a record deal at 13 and announced his arrival in the music industry with his hit single “iYiYi,” said he was surprised to learn that he has a solid following in the Philippines.
“It’s crazy to think that I have that sort of global reach,” he told the
Inquirer in an e-mail interview.
“I have an amazing team that travels with me…a real great group of young guys,” he related. “But of course when I am gone I also miss my family. It gets hard after a while to be constantly changing time zones, hotels, etc.”
Simpson, who was also a champion swimmer in his home state Queensland, is behind such songs as “Home to Mama (featuring Justin Bieber),” “Pretty Brown Eyes” and “La Da Dee.”
He was previously signed to the US record label Atlantic, which released his first two albums, “Paradise” (2012) and “Surfers Paradise” (2013).
His coming third record, “Free,” however, will be his first offering as an independent artist.
“It really expresses who I am as an artist. No restraints, no third-party opinion—just pure passion manifested in music,” pointed out Simpson, who recently broke up with girlfriend, American fashion model Gigi Hadid.
Presented by Wilbros Live, “Cody Simpson: Live in Manila” is set on Aug. 12 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater, Resorts World Manila.

How has your music evolved?
I’ve grown a lot as a guitar player, so you’re going to hear a lot of guitar music on my new album.
Why did you decide to work as an independent artist? What are the pros and cons?
Everything is hassle-free. My team and I make all the decisions without needing to consult or wait for the opinion of an outside party. We don’t have to wait for clearances or anything. I am free to express my creativity, and be who I want to be.
How was the transition from child pop singer to adult recording artist?
Everyone goes through it…It’ s just a natural process of evolution.
How’s your friendship with Justin Bieber? Has he given you advice regarding your music career?
Justin and I are good mates. I’ve toured with him for a while and recorded a bunch of music, too… We’re going down separate paths, but we remain close and respect each other. We actually jammed at a bar a few nights ago.
Your love life has been fodder for show biz gossip sites. How do you deal with this?
It’s tough but it’s over now, so I am having to deal with it less. I tend to shy away from the spotlight in that situation.
