When they were much younger, Karylle, Robin Nievera, Isabella, and Paolo Valenciano would at times bump into each other backstage during their parents’ shows or concert tours. Now they’re set to headline their own gig—all together, for the first time—and show just how far they’ve come into their own as artists.
Being the daughters and sons of such iconic artists as Zsa Zsa Padilla (Karylle), Martin Nievera and Pops Fernandez (Robin), Kuh Ledesma (Isabella), and Gary Valenciano (Paolo), is something they cherish and feel proud of. But it can be hard, too, they admitted, especially since they’re in the same industry, trying to carve names of their own. The comparisons are inevitable.
We asked the four music artists what it was like growing up in the shadows of their parents, and how they coped with it. The show, mounted by DSL Productions, is titled “Next Attraction” and will be held to morrow at the Music Museum in Greenhills, San Juan. (Call 6593474, 7216726 or 8919999.)
Isabella
“I simply focused on the fact that I never saw myself as my mom’s mini-me or the next Kuh. We are our own people. We have similar interests, but are ultimately different persons. And I’d like to think that we follow different paths. I always think of things I can do to become a better performer and person.”
Karylle
“I had a wonderful time growing up, surrounded by fantastic musicians during a high point in local music. I was my mother’s tail—hanging out, running around with her during rehearsals or gigs at the Tavern on the Square.
“But I had some issues, too. I was painfully shy and working my way around it was a long process. People often told me that I have the same vocal quality as my mom and so at times I felt like I was merely impersonating her. But things got so much better after I’ve accepted such things.
“Whenever I felt insecure about myself, my mom would tell me that she wants me to become a better version of herself.”
Paolo
“It’s all a matter of perspective. Ten years ago, it was something that fueled my insecurities. Every conversation wasn’t about me, but about my dad and how people wanted to meet him and get an autograph. I was 18 and trying to find my purpose and career path, so it was quite tough.
“But if you ask me now, I’ll say that I’m proud of my father and his achievements. When people tell me that my father has inspired them, I get thrilled. It’s an honor to be his son, a part of his family. I think time has taught me how to have that perspective.
Robin
“My goal was never to become the ‘Concert Prince.’ I love my parents’ music. But I’m not here in the music industry to match their records, to perform in a sold-out concert or have a triple platinum-selling album in a span of a week. It’s a dream, of course, but it’s not something I obsess over. My focus is to create good music.”
