What would campus life be without a little mischief? It’s the best antidote to boredom. And those folies de jeunesse always stand out in our memory when we recall our student days. We are all free to do something foolish, at least once. But some of us are repeat offenders. I plead guilty as charged!
Since it’s back-to-school month, I asked some celebs about the pranks they pulled as students.
It’s quite interesting to know that long before these stars became image-conscious (it’s in the job description), they also misbehaved… all in the spirit of fun.
Martin Nievera: I never pulled a prank as much as a prank was pulled on me. My house was on the corner of a busy street so I was an easy target.
Schoolmates would honk their car horns, bullies would throw beer bottles and friends flashed their headlights all the time. But the worst was when our house and the big tree in front of it were decorated with toilet paper. This was a common prank back then, but my parents were not thrilled at all. It took me the whole day to clean up the mess. Later, I was told that it was a sign of popularity. Gee, I didn’t know that fame was so full of crap!
Rita Avila: When I was in elementary, I tickled my friend so hard she peed on the floor.
John Estrada: Back in high school, during All Saints’ Day, my friend and I dangled a lit candle on a string, to make it appear as if it was floating in the dark. A friend thought he just had a paranormal experience and screamed like crazy. We rushed to calm him down. To our surprise, there was a puddle where he stood. He peed his pants.
Gabby Eigenmann: In high school, I had to pee so bad but the restroom was full. I ended up peeing in a jar, but I could not get rid of it. Our teacher had arrived and I was forced to hide the jar behind a window. After three weeks, the jar was still there. My classmate opened the window so forcefully that the jar fell from the fourth floor to the ground level. The stench reached all the classrooms. Everyone went out and gathered at the quadrangle because of the ammonia-like smell.
Suzi Entrata-Abrera: The worst prank I pulled was in college. I stumbled on an odd mail-order bride letter from a man who lived in the United Kingdom. I saw it in one of the books in the library and put it in my friend’s bag. She told our teacher and they were about to inform school authorities when I fessed up. My goodness, it could have gotten so out of hand. My friend eventually forgave me.
Jed Madela: Just before leaving the classroom after the morning dismissal, I wrote on the blackboard: “Faculty meeting, 1:30 p.m. No classes.” It wasn’t true. While I was having lunch, students from other sections saw it and copied it on their blackboards. So the entire school thought it was legit. When teachers came back that afternoon, they were surprised to see just a few students. Of course, I made sure I erased what I wrote on the blackboard before our teacher’s arrival.
Joel Lamangan: In a high school play, I missed my cue and came in early. Everybody on stage panicked! I kept ad-libbing, but it was too long and became a monologue. The audience didn’t notice, but our teacher wasn’t amused. She fired me! It was supposed to be dramatic, but it turned into a comedy of errors. The audience and some actors kept laughing. To top it off, she was the one who wrote the play.
Ramon Bautista: My friends and I placed concrete cylinders in our victims’ bags. They got even by putting rats in ours!
John Arcilla: In high school, I often stood in the corridor. But it was prohibited for students to loiter during class hours. I didn’t notice my teacher, who tapped my shoulder with a fan and reprimanded me, “Why are you here?” I shot back, “Why are you late?” I just stared at her until she entered the room!

Queens for a day
I immensely enjoyed Mother’s Day at the “#LOVEYOUMOM” event of Lifestyle Network and Working Mom magazine in Bonifacio Global City. Mommy bloggers, promo winners and media colleagues felt like queens for a day as we moved around BGC in the Luxe Bus for our “Me Time” pampering tour. They really smothered us mothers with TLC.
The fun-filled day kicked off with hair and makeup treatment at Salon Privat, in partnership with Kérastase. Next stop was a delicious feast at Yoree Korean Dining, followed by a mani-pedi at Manos Nail Lounge.
We shopped till we dropped at Mango. Lastly, at the “#LOVEYOUMOM” fair at Bonifacio High Street, Jay-R and Kai Honasan serenaded the mothers, while Nickelodeon’s Dora and Boots regaled the kids. Merci beaucoup to Lifestyle Network and Working Mom mag, especially to my sis, Kathy Solis, for making us feel like “SuperwoMoms.”
