Rosita Castor, housewife: “Having a popular actor for a son can do wonders to a show biz ‘retiree.’ Take Karla Estrada: Daniel Padilla’s mom never had it so good since she quit singing and acting in favor of motherhood. To her credit, Karla is doing well on ‘Your Face Sounds Familiar.’ She was outstanding when she impersonated Chaka Khan and Sharon Cuneta.
“As for the show itself, I have one request: Can the people in charge of the contestants’ prosthetics and makeup double-check the final look of their creations? Most of the time, the contestants look like comic or horrific versions of the celebrities they’re aping, like what happened to Edgar Allan Guzman and Jay-R as Ricky Martin and Alice Cooper, respectively.”
Other notes:
Mark Cimafranca, bank employee: “An interesting development in the upcoming fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. is the news about Sylvester Stallone offering Pacman a role in the next ‘Expendables’ film.
“If that movie project materializes, even if our boxing champ loses the fight, it would be another feather in his multititled cap. I would rather that he becomes an international actor than run for higher office in next year’s elections.”
Golden buzzer
Hanna Georfe, graduate student: “Gerphil Geraldine Flores, the Filipina classical singer who didn’t make it to ‘Pilipinas Got Talent’ some years ago but recently got the golden buzzer from David Foster on ‘Asia’s Got Talent,’ has finally vindicated herself. It’s instructive to note that, in our country, classical singing isn’t much appreciated. But, Flores proves that, just like pop singers, classical performers also have an audience.”
Maritess Daguman, televiewer: “ABS-CBN should be commended for giving Beauty Gonzales her biggest break thus far in the just-concluded ‘Dream Dad.’ She held her own alongside her more experienced coactors!”
Cyril Espina, student: “It broke my heart to learn that a once popular show biz celebrity has ended up begging for financial assistance for medication due to poverty. Let this be a lesson for our current stars: Invest your money wisely—and save for rainy days!”
