There can be no better time than now to know the story behind the story of one of the greatest boxers of all time, Manny Pacquiao. As we all cheer Pacman on for the “Fight of the Century,” watching “Kid Kulafu” (in cinemas Wednesday) will make us applaud him even more.
Cesar “Buboy” Montano portrays Manny’s Uncle Zandro, a man who played a vital part in the boxer’s struggling days. Just like Pacman, my BFF Buboy may get knocked down, but he is never knocked out.
Here’s my one-on-one with Buboy:
Tell us about your role.
Uncle Zandro was the man who introduced Kid Kulafu (Manny) to boxing. He taught him the basics. He owned a junk shop where young Manny worked part-time after school.
What did Manny tell you about his youth?
He told me that it was a very tough time for him and his family. They had no permanent address. They were afraid of the clashes between government troops and rebels. They had to stay in his Uncle Zandro’s house for a time.
You had to underact in this film. Is that more difficult?
Since I play a simple man, it was necessary to underact. It’s tricky … I had to be in total control and precise at the same time. I find it more challenging and fulfilling.
Tell us about director Paul Soriano’s video interview with Uncle Zandro.
I watched it over and over again. I found him charismatic, humble and good-spirited. A wonderful mentor, he encouraged Manny to take boxing seriously.
Kapuso weekend
Some of the hottest stars of GMA 7 had a “summerific” experience during the recent “Kapuso Weekend,” held at the famous Dakak Park and Beach Resort in Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte. The celebs gathered for a sporting event, a battle between Mike Tan’s Team Aliguay and LJ Reyes’ Team Dakak.
Members of Mike’s team were Alden Richards, Gwen Zamora, JC Tiuseco, Mark Herras and Rochelle Pangilinan. LJ’s team consisted of Andrea Torres, Benjamin Alves, Geoff Eigenmann, Louise de los Reyes and Rafael Rosell.
Team Aliguay was hailed champion, while Geoff and Gwen were named Most Valuable Players. The stars enjoyed jamming with fans during “Kapuso Zumba” and “Kapuso Reggae Night.” They also headlined two “Kapuso Nights” at Gloria’s Fantasyland, hosted by Pekto, Boobay and DJ Rico Robles. The event’s highlights will be seen in the “Let’s Fiesta” TV special (airing April 19) via all nine regional stations.
‘Mr. C’s’ summer workshops
Summer workshops at the Music School of Ryan Cayabyab will start today. Special classes offered are Musikids for children ages 4 to 5 and 6 to 7; 14-K for 8 to 11 and 12- to 16-year-olds; and Musiktheater for 17 and above.
