Batanes is relatively isolated. It has 10 islands, but only Batan, Itbayat and Sabtang are inhabited.
Dominican friars visited Batanes as early as 1688. Under Spanish rule, it was formally annexed to the Philippines in 1783—the last territory added to the Philippines.
Surprisingly, many of its roads are made of concrete, with utility vehicles in Basco and Sabtang serving resident Ivatans and tourists alike.
Batanes is now a major tourist destination. I began my Batanes Photo Safari in 2006 and have seen how it has changed through the years.
