A friend of mine was on the phone recently and was overheard saying, “I heard you say nasty things about me. You’re a liar—and I’m going to get back at you!” Thereafter, she broke down and cried.
A great sage once said, “This world is full of people who will say all sorts of horrible things about us. But, we must focus on our spiritual goal and move forward. Don’t latch on to useless distractions!”
He then proceeded to give this analogy: “When you walk down a busy street, there are many people walking by. Do you talk to each one of them and explain your life? When you have a destination to reach, you can’t allow yourself to be held back by fleeting interactions.”
If you observe how the mind works, it jumps from one petty thing to another—that’s the nature of the mind, and it can lead to depression or self-pity. But, a wise person sees what’s truly important and ignores those that are trivial and destructive.
What can you do about an overactive and demanding mind? Let it focus on the cultivation of spiritual love for the Supreme. Lies cover us with darkness, but truth enlightens—and reminds us of the real purpose of existence!
