It is high time the spotlight be focused also on our indie bands and acts. They form a deep well of diverse and amazing talents in the local scene. I will be showcasing once in a while an indie band or act that to my mind deserves a look and more attention.

So below, let’s get to know Hidden Nikki:

What is the origin of your band?

FEATURED STORIES

AARON GONZALES : The band started out in school. We wanted to be part of the school’s (Ateneo) music organization. Aaron, Jason and Gilbert were the initial members and then added Denise Santos later on. We wanted to be more serious with our music so we continued the group even after we all graduated. Eventually, we all became full time musicians.
What are the band’s musical influences?

AARON GONZALES: We love Jamie Cullum and Snarky Puppy. Some of us listen to Experaza Spalding and Tal Wilkenfeld. Our Manager Toti, also opened up more possibilities for the band to venture into more indie sounding tunes like Tahiti 80 and Paul Weller.

AARON GONZALES: For the unfamiliar, imagine going into coffee shops and hotel lounges but in a rock show. It doesn’t make sense but we try to make sense out of it. We love and appreciate jazz music and we try to give it a little bit more energy, punch and modern sensibilities.

What do you think of the current local scene?

AARON GONZALES: We think the current scene is very interesting. There are so many to choose from. But the trends come and go way too fast compared to what we are used to. This could be a good and bad thing. One thing for sure is that Filipinos are really talented. Just know where to look and you will find a lot of quality acts out there.
