Freeing the mind

One time, a teenage girl told her aunt that she wanted to go to the mall. The aunt said no, because she was busy with a lot of chores.

She explained, “Your mind is restless and agitated. It’s better to learn discipline and say no to things that are of no value. Stay home and engage in meaningful activities. Here are materials you can work with, so you can improve your art skills.” —As a result, her niece produced beautiful artworks.

People allow their minds to “harass” them. Those who suffer from “mind harasment” don’t just have nightmares but “daymares” that cause agitation and suffering.

Some people direct their minds to do something good, but others just let theirs float, wander—or act foolishly! There are rich people who dream of getting richer by concocting schemes to exploit others, others turn to pornography.

Some think that the solution is to empty their minds of all thoughts, which is, of course, impossible. Others believe that it’s all right to let their minds go as they please and, as a result, end up lost.

The real solution lies in directing the mind toward wisdom and spirituality—and freedom from illusion and suffering—by spiritually beneficial activities such as reading books of wisdom, meditation and prayer.
