The Japan Foundation, through the Japan Foundation Asia Center, is teaming up with UniJapan and the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) for various cultural exchange projects, which will continue until 2020.
Under the partnership, the Japan Foundation will promote exchanges and networking opportunities among different film professionals.
Also part of the program is “Crosscut Asia,” a showcase of Asian films focusing on specific countries and artists.
This year, the Spirit of Asia Award will be presented to an entry in the Asian Future section.
Directed by three emerging Japanese and Asian directors, an omnibus film with a common theme is in the works, too.
The partnership will promote screenings of Japanese films all over the region as well.
Film buyers are likewise invited to the TIFF market, Tiffcom.
Lastly, the foundation envisions more Asian films in the fest (to be held Oct. 23 to 31).
This year, three Filipino films will be featured at the TIFF: Khavn de la Cruz’s “Ruined Heart: Another Love Story Between a Criminal and a Whore,” in the main competition; Pepe Diokno’s “Above the Clouds,” in the Asian Future section; and Lav Diaz’s “Mula sa Kung Ano ang Noon,” in the World Focus category.
