Showstoppers galore in ‘Chicago,’ Manila-bound this December

/ 09:00 AM August 31, 2014

The hit cabaret-style “Bedazzled” show at Club Mwah in Mandaluyong City has taken several incarnations. Of only two numbers that have remained on the playlist for 10 years (since the revue was launched), the one acclaimed more for a no-nonsense approach than for unbridled hilarity (like many of the others) is the drag-queen company’s take on “Cell Block Tango,” from the Tony award-winning “Chicago The Musical.”

Now, the Tony award-winning original is coming to the Philippines for a limited season. That’s “Cell Block Tango,” plus several more showstoppers in a single production.

The Manila run, which starts Dec. 2, will be staged at The Theatre at Solaire, and will feature an all-American cast.

Described by The Times UK as “the sharpest, slickest show on the block,” the Broadway/West End blockbuster is set in the decadent 1920s and based on a book by musical theater lyricist Fred Ebb and actor/director/dancer/screenwriter Bob Fosse. The compelling music is by the multi-awarded (Tony, Olivier, Emmy, Grammy) John Kander.

The dazzling depiction of a number of true events in the Prohibition era is vividly brought to life in this musical, stage-directed by another awarded Broadway veteran, David Hyslop, and choreographed by David Bushman.

“It is a very clever, sexy show,” says James Cundall, CEO of Lunchbox Theatrical Productions, which is bringing the play here, with Concertus Manila. He cites “Chicago’s” sensuality and sophistication for its being “the No. 1 longest-running American musical in Broadway history.”

Time Magazine tagged the show “a triumph,” and  Newsweek found it “smashing.” Entertainment Weekly boldly called it “Broadway’s most electrifying show.”
