MANILA, Philippines—Kris Aquino was tearful when her brother, President Benigno III, mentioned their parents in his State of the Nation Address on Monday afternoon.
The President is the only son while Kris is the youngest daughter of the late President Corazon Aquino and martyred Senator Benigno Aquino Jr..
Kris was seen holding back her tears when President Aquino said, “The Filipino is worth dying for,” the famous last words of Senator “Ninoy” Aquino before he was gunned down in 1983 during the Marcos dictatorship.
As shown by television cameras of various stations, Kris finally shed tears when the President followed it up with his modified version: “The Filipino is worth living for. The Filipino is definitely worth fighting for,” referring to his administration’s critics and calls for his impeachment.
Kris is one of the most popular entertainment celebrities and product endorsers in the Philippines.
