Bagging two awards at the recent MOR 101.9 Pinoy Music Awards (Morpma), teen heartthrob Daniel Padilla drove his army of fangirls—a few of them in school uniforms—to hysteria at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Daniel, who has headlined two sold-out solo concerts, was declared Male Artist of the Year and won Album of the Year for his sophomore record, “DJP,” which has reached double platinum status since its release in 2013.

Fans did it

“I want to thank you all, because I know it’s not my voice that won me this award—it’s you!” Daniel said as he raised his Male Artist of the Year trophy. A banner-toting supporter

screamed in response, “I love you, DJ!”

Results were determined by text votes (30 percent), the Morpma awards committee (40 percent) and a special panel of judges composed of singers Noel Cabangon, Lani Misalucha and Christian Bautista (30 percent). MOR 101.9 is ABS-CBN’s FM radio station.

Pop-rock artist Yeng Constantino’s catchy hit, “Chinito,” from the album “Metamorphosis,” was hailed Song of the Year. “Thank you for supporting Filipino music!” the purple-haired artist said.

Sarah Geronimo won Female Artist of the Year on the strength of her single “Ikot-Ikot” from the album “Expressions.” “Radio remains a vital aspect of a music artist’s career,” she said in her speech.

At a press con a week earlier, disc jockey Toni Aquino said helping the music industry by playing more original Filipino songs was a cause that she shared with colleagues at MOR 101.9. “We want to champion our own music, encourage artists and composers to create more songs,” she said.

DJ Reggie Valdez also pointed out, that amid the popularity of revivals and covers of foreign songs, it’s important for them to cite those who continue to come up with new material. “This is a celebration of songs and artists that made an impact from January to December 2013,” he said.

Other winners: “Kahit Na” by Toni Gonzaga, Dance Hit of the Year; “Dati,” Sam Concepcion and Tippy Dos Santos, Collaboration of the Year; “Pusong Bato,” Jovit Baldivino, Best OPM
